Garmin nüvi 855 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator

I am very happy with my Garmin 855, I consider it to be my front seat navigator. The 855/855T are top of the line when it comes to getting around in areas that are unfamiliar or if you are just looking for a location to eat, sleep, gas up, the Garmin also displays a list of locations in the local area or just type in a city and it will also provide a list for that city too. It a man and woman best road friend night or day.

Overall, the thing works. When you consider what an amazing thing any GPS is, the complaints seem small, but here they are:

I HATE that this unit displays your speed constantly instead of being able to select to display your distance to your destination as on my older Garmin Streetpilot. Doesn't every car have a speedometer? Why in the world would I need my GPS to tell me how fast I'm going? I don't like have to touch the screen to have it show my distance to destination, then again to go back to the map--I would like my distance to destination shown all the time rather than my speed. I am hoping a future firmware update will fix this problem.

I also hate that when on freeways, it will give me the distance of 1-3 miles until my next "turn", but when I get there, the instruction is just to continue on that same freeway--"bear left"---so until I get close to that next "turn", I think it's going to tell me to exit but then in reality it seems to have these invisible landmarks and so to figure out how much longer I'm really staying on the freeway, I have to go to the turns list and add up all the fake "turns" until it really is going to tell me to exit the freeway. This could potentially also be fixed by a firmware update I'm hoping.

Those are two pretty big complaints. I actually with I could just go back to my old Streetpilot, but the touchscreen stopped working after 5 years of use. Other than that, I've had no problem with the volume of the voice commands, though I find the Australian male voice to be the loudest and easiest to understand, and I want to try the custom downloadable voices that others have mentioned are available from third parties.Get more detail about Garmin nüvi 855 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Speech Recognition.

Garmin nüvi 855 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Speech Recognition Decide Now

This is a great GPS. I bought it because of the large screen size for hiking even
though there are some serious shortcomings for this use.
1) battery life is only 3.5 to 4 hours.
2) the unit cannot be completely turned off unless one removes the battery.
I was aware of these things before I bought it but Garmin does not make
a trail GPS with a large screen. The battery life is definitely a problem.
I have to carry 2 spare batteries(3 total) for a long 11 hour day hike if
I run a continuous track log. One can enhance battery life if one dims the
screen when not reading it. I have also used a NUVI 350 (4 hr battery life)
all day by turning it off(350 can be completely turned off) and turning it on
only for position checks(NUVI 350 does not have a tracklog capability).
The Nuvi 855 can be put in sleep mode to further improve battery life but
the tracklog is not active in sleep mode. Battery life is 7-10 days in sleep mode.
As an automobile GPS the 855 is superb. The lane assist display is helpful as is the speed limit
data display which is quite accurate. The trip log data is very nice showing
both moving average speed and total average speed among others.
Loading maps from a micro SD card is rather slow on a cold start. One can
find free maps at [...] that are quite accurate.
Garmin now provides both MAC and PC software for the NUVI series.Get more detail about Garmin nüvi 855 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Speech Recognition.

Garmin nüvi 855 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Speech Recognition Right now

This is my second Garmin. I purchased this model for the speech recognition feature. I works fairly well but does take a little getting used to. I really like the larger screen. I moved up from a C320 which until recently had been a very reliable unit. My biggest complaint about the 855 is the volume level. Even at 100% I can barely hear it when I'm on the freeway. I tried using the FM mode for speech through my radio but there was too much static to make that feasible. My old C320 had a greater volume range than this 855 and was never a problem producing a listening level. I contacted Garmin about the problem and the only thing they could suggest to me is to plug in auxiliary speakers. Just what I need, something else cluttering up my dashboard.Get more detail about Garmin nüvi 855 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Speech Recognition.

Low Price Garmin nüvi 855 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Speech Recognition

My husband bought the Garmin, and paid a lot more money that Amazon has it for. I, however, just downloaded Navigator to my Verizon cell phone...I love it. It works just like Garmin, only better. I feel it is easier to use, and has more features that I like and find helpful. It runs 9.99 a month, and it is free with certain calling plans. I was going to buy a Garmin for myself...but not now.

Just thought I would throw that out there.Get more detail about Garmin nüvi 855 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Speech Recognition.

Save Garmin nüvi 855 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Speech Recognition

I am not a GPS guru as this was my first nav unit. I just sold my other car which had dash navigation in which you could only type in the street # and address while in park which was very user unfriendly, especially for a passenger to operate it. My new car does not have a navigation system. The voice command of the 855 Nuvi is awesome and the street names and graphics are far superior compared to what was in the Cadillac. I chose not to do the windshield mount since I am getting that Nav units are popular smash and grab items. I mounted mine with a single 1/2 width strip of velcro which rests at the bottom of the vertical center dash display. It is very easy to see and remove if I want to store it in the center console. I only use with battery power since I did not want leads going to the cig lighter. Furthermore, I attached the voice command prompt buttom on the shift lever as opposed to the steering wheel which was the recommended location. The only drawback compared the other indash nav unit is that the voice command to turn left or right only gives you about a 50' warning which in my opinion should be sooner. Overall, I am extremely happy with the unit.Get more detail about Garmin nüvi 855 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Speech Recognition.

Discount Garmin nüvi 855 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Speech Recognition

I've owned several GPS units now, including one of the earliest TomTom units, the Magella Maestro 1470, and the Garmin C340. The Nuvi 855 is by far the best I've owned.

Pros:
1. Voice navigation. The voice navigation is simply amazing. It has no trouble understanding my commands, and makes using the GPS so much easier, especially on busy freeways.

2. Lane assist. This was probably as important to me as voice navigation when I decided to buy this unit, and it's another big plus.

3. Fast and accurate routing. It's especially quick at rerouting.

Cons:
1. As many other people have said, the volume is too low. Even after reading those reviews, I was surprised at just how low it was. I got around that by running a cable from the GPS into my minivan's audio plug. And with a splitter, I'm able to run both my iPod and GPS into the audio plug, although the Ipod's sound quality suffers somewhat when the GPS is also plugged in. But it's worth it to have the GPS provide commands through the automobile's speakers. The built-in FM transmitter provided very poor sound quality.

I don't have a cable to get FM traffic yet, but I plan to get one. But so far, this unit has worked very well. It did lock up on me once, but I have since updated the firmware (as well as the map, which was free).

The Magellan 1470, by the way, had a beautiful screen but was horrible at routing. The most recent TomTom I tried had serious keyboard problems; I would press the letter "A" and would get "AAAAAAAAA" on the screen - not helpful when you're on a busy freeway.

Best Buy Garmin GPS 60CSx Lowest Price, Free Shipping offer

I've had mine for several years, and after reading about the newer Colorado and Oregon units, I would still go with the 60CSx. The screen is more readable in sunlight than the newer units, despite their bigger screen size, and it still has a more accurate antenna/receiver system. It's the best handheld for hiking because of its accuracy and topo maps, and a pretty good navigator in the car as well, so it highly versatile if you need a unit for both purposes. I particularly love the fact that it can save "infinitely" long tracks as GPX files in its flash memory (organized by date), long after its 10,000-point active track log is full.

In addition to being able to use it now with the Mac, another great thing that has happened more recently, is that you don't have to go to Garmin to get downloadable topo maps. For example detailed 7.5'-scale New England topo maps are available at [.....]and they're free. You still need a PC to install the maps, but then you can transfer them to your Mac for use with Garmin's software.

I do have some annoyances, all of them related to use in the car:

1. Zooming out to get a big picture of where you are, covering an area bigger than about 20 miles across, can be very tedious due to slow redraw, and going beyond that is near-useless. This is not an issue when hiking or boating, but in a car it means you still need road maps if you want to get the really big picture. You'll tear your hair out trying to viewing a spot a few hundred miles from where you are now by zooming and panning. However, if you know the city or other point of interest, you can use the Find function to get there quickly.

2. Small roads disappear when you zoom out a certain amount, which makes sense except when those are the only roads around. In sparsely populated areas, this can make getting your bearings difficult. To be fair, I haven't found any of the dashboard GPSes do any better in this regard. Even online mapping services have this flaw.

3. The search feature to find something generic (a restaurant, gas station, etc.) gives you a list based on distance from where you are, not distance from the route in the direction you are traveling. Because of this I've found that feature difficult to use unless I know the name of a specific place I'm going to.Buy Cheap Garmin GPS 60CSx Lowest Price, Order Now! [Click Here!]

Low Price Garmin GPS 60CSx Handheld GPS Navigator

This is the best GPS unit I've ever owned, and I've owned a few over the years starting back in 1994 with the Magellan Trailblazer. Last year I decided to step up to a mapping unit with the Magellan Triton 500. It was a piece of garbage. The compass spun around like I was in the Bermuda Triangle. That and the fact that it kept crashing and giving me the Windows screen of death. Total garbage for an instrument that is supposed to help keep you alive in the great outdoors.

I went back to using a Garmin GPS III. It didn't crash but it was a bit rudimentary compared to the color mapping units.

Last week I decided to invest in the Garmin 60CSx. I received it in the mail this morning and it works great! I've already downloaded free topo and street maps for my state ([...]) and installed it in the unit on the included 256 MB card via the Mac software that was free from their web site. I've also loaded about 20 geocaches via one click of a button while the unit was plugged into my MacBook connected to the internet. I've also laid out our favorite hiking route in the beautiful Opal Creek Wilderness.

This unit is amazing! (and no spinning compass, it's locked in true). It's a bit foreboding at first because it's got a lot going on in it, but once you get the hang of it, it's intuitive. Within two hours of opening the box, I installed full topo maps and street maps and it loaded with no worries.

This is well worth the money. I'll never buy another Magellan product. There is no question about it. If you disagree, you've never used the two side by side. This is the best unit hands down.

The reception is amazing also. I'm getting 11 satellites all with WAAS and I'm sitting downstairs in our home in a valley surrounded by huge trees and forest here in Oregon. I can't imagine any better reception and I've used a lot of units. It starts up and locks on to our position in under 5 seconds. Amazing!

The unit has been on since I put the batteries in this morning at 11AM. Now it's 9:30PM and there still 3/4 remaining on the batteries which weren't new when I installed them (I needed batteries so I took the ones out of one of my 3 year olds RC remote control).

We're Oregon guides and we've never depended on anything other than maps, a compass and our knowledge base. Now I feel confident adding this to our gear to assist with navigation. Remember a GPS is not a replacement to a map and compass and knowing how to use them.

This unit is well worth the price. There's a reason this is the unit all others are measured to!Buy Cheap Garmin GPS 60CSx Lowest Price, Order Now! [Click Here!]

Cheapest Garmin nüvi 855 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Speech Recognition

My Garmin Nuvi 855 and case arrived August 31, 2009. I opened the case first. Turns out that was a mistake. Should have checked out the GPS first. I put it on charge for a couple of hours and then turned it on. With in 30 minutes of setting it up, entering Favorites, etc., it completely failed 4 times. The screen goes blank and it shuts off. When it is on and you are viewing the map, it is constantly jumping around as if you are moving. Also the volume is very low compared to my Nuvi 350. Even if the 855 worked, I would not be happy with the volume. I sent it back yesterday and hope to get a full refund. I loved the Nuvi 350, but it finally failed after about 4 years of use.Get more detail about Garmin nüvi 855 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Speech Recognition.

Used the 855 for a road trip from Wisconsin to Branson, Missouri. Easy to use basic features. New roads in Branson did not show up on device. Needed to be updated and it was ordered in mid-June and used in early July.
Did not take the time to get the speech recognition working, so can't comment on that.Get more detail about Garmin nüvi 855 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Speech Recognition.

Cheapest Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS Receiver With Heart Rate Monitor

This product does exactly what it says it does and makes my runs more enjoyable. No more planning out routes and trying to remember which landmark is closest to a given mileage. The lap pace feature helps with keeping my pace constant on my longer runs. The software that comes with it will let you track every feature of your run/walk/bike ride from heart rate (if you use the monitor)to speed, altitude, incline, etc. and puts it on a map so that you can see what the hard/easy parts are. It will let you customize zones (aerobic, anaerobic, etc.) and track how long you spend in each zone during your run. There are a lot of features that I don't use, but could be useful. It's flexible, and you can do quite a bit of customizing. It usually takes me about 30 seconds to acquire satellites when I turn it on, but I've been using it for several months now, and it hasn't dropped a signal yet--and I run under a lot of trees. No mountains or tall buildings. The battery life seems pretty good. I run 3-4 times per week for 30 min to an hour each. I have to charge the battery about once a month, maybe. I was concerned about size. And it is fairly large, but it hasn't been a problem for me--it doesn't seem heavy. The up side of the size is that you can get a lot of info on one screen and it's large enough to read while your runnning, etc. Of course, if you are lookinBuy Garmin Forerunner 305 Lowest Price, Order Now!
